According to Ayurvedic traditions, Chairata, also known as "Chiretta," is a bitter tonic to the liver, useful in the treatment of problems related to the heart, eyes, and skin. It is similar in usefullness to the well known bitter root of Gentian. Hence Swertia is used as a stomachic, a drying astringent, as well as a febrifuge and antidiahrretic.
